Airdrie SW Rec Centre Update — Construction Starts 2027, Phase 1 Opens 2029

When will Airdrie's new SW Rec Centre open — and what's going to be in it?

Airdrie city council has officially endorsed a concept design for the new southwest recreation centre. Construction is now set to begin in 2027 — pushed back one year from the original 2026 start — with Phase 1 (pools and fitness) opening in 2029. Phase 2 adds three sheets of ice, including a 750-seat feature arena, in 2032. Phase 3 brings a large fieldhouse and gymnasiums in 2034. By the time Phase 1 opens, Airdrie is projected to have over 100,000 residents — making this the city's most significant infrastructure build in a generation.

Well, it's been a long time coming — but Airdrie's new SW Rec Centre just took a meaningful step forward.

City council recently endorsed a concept design for the facility, which means we now have a real picture of what this building is going to look like — what's inside each phase, how parking flows, and when each section is scheduled to open. I went through the full council presentation in this video and broke it all down for you.

Before we get into the design, here's the timeline update you need to know: construction has been pushed from 2026 to 2027, and Phase 1's opening has moved from 2028 to 2029. I'm not thrilled about another delay — but at least the project is moving forward with a real endorsed design.

The concept design gives us a clear three-phase plan for the rec centre. Here's how it breaks down.

Phase 1 — Pools and Fitness (Opening 2029)

Phase 1 will anchor the centre of the site. Access comes in from 24th Street on the west side and South Winds Drive on the south side, with a dedicated drop-off loop included. About 300 parking stalls are planned for this phase.

On the ground floor, you're looking at a leisure pool and a lap pool as the main draw — plus a food area, admin and front desk, a studio space, a mechanical room, a play area with a climbing room, and a gym space. Watch Brad walk through the Phase 1 ground floor layout at 3:10.

Upstairs, the fitness area takes over: a running track, full gym equipment, studio rooms for group workouts and yoga, and an upper-level seating area overlooking the lap pool below.

This is the kind of facility Airdrie has needed for years. Genesis Place is excellent, but this new centre is going to serve the growing south and southwest end of the city — and by 2029, that part of Airdrie is going to be a lot bigger.

Speaking of growth — if you want to understand what the city is spending money on and why your property taxes are going up, this breakdown of Airdrie's 2026 operating budget covers exactly that, including why the SW Rec Centre is part of the conversation.

Phase 2 — Ice Rinks (Opening 2032)

Phase 2 goes up on the west side of the property and adds three sheets of ice. The parking situation also grows — an additional 380 stalls are added, bringing the two-phase total to 682 spots, including dedicated bus parking for hockey tournaments. See Brad explain the Phase 2 layout at 4:23.

The three rinks break down like this:

  • Two community arenas — standard rinks with a small viewing area above

  • One feature arena — a 750-seat venue with a full concourse designed to host larger events and competitions

The feature arena has its own dedicated entrance, which means it can run events independently — even when the rest of the building is closed for the night. That's smart design for a growing city that's going to want to host tournaments and regional events.

If you're curious how Airdrie's existing rec facilities are evolving in the meantime, Ground Press Coffee is opening two new locations inside Inspire and Genesis Place this year — a sign of how these facilities are being upgraded and activated.

Phase 3 — Fieldhouse and Gymnasiums (Opening 2034)

Phase 3 lands on the east side of the property. This is the fieldhouse — a large, flexible indoor sports space that can be configured multiple ways:

  • One full 65 x 110 metre field

  • Two 65 x 55 metre half-fields

  • Four 50 x 32.5 metre quarter-fields

Spectator seating lines both sides, with a bit more capacity on the west. Phase 3 also adds 318 more parking stalls — bringing the total across all three phases to 1,000 parking spots. Watch Brad cover the Phase 3 fieldhouse details at 5:31.

The full facility will have four separate entry points: one for the fieldhouse, one for the pool and fitness area, and two dedicated entrances for the ice rink section. Each part of the building can operate on its own schedule.

What Comes Next

Now that the concept design is endorsed, the project moves into schematic design — where architects work out the actual construction details. City council also asked administration to come back on July 7th with potential cost-saving options for the project.

The concept design can still change before construction drawings are finalized — that's just how the process works. But the broad strokes are locked in now: three phases, opening in 2029, 2032, and 2034.

Here's why that timeline matters: by 2029, Airdrie is projected to hit 100,000 residents. We're going to need this facility. The delay from 2028 to 2029 for Phase 1 is frustrating, but the bigger picture is that Airdrie is finally building the infrastructure that a city this size needs.

If you're buying a home in Airdrie — especially in the southwest — this rec centre is a meaningful amenity that will be right in your backyard. Worth knowing about before you make a purchase decision. And if you want to know what's happening with outdoor rec in the meantime, Airdrie's outdoor skating rinks had their own infrastructure story earlier this year.
