In early January 2026, the City of Airdrie paused all outdoor skating rink maintenance — including the flooding of the popular skating loop at Northeast Regional Park — due to Stage 4 water restrictions triggered by a major water main break in Calgary.
Why Were the Rinks Paused?
A significant water main break in Calgary forced the implementation of Stage 4 water restrictions across the region. Because Airdrie's water supply is connected to Calgary's system, the city was required to reduce non-essential water usage — and outdoor rink flooding fell into that category.
