Airdrie Outdoor Skating Rink Maintenance Was Paused in Early January 2026 Due to Calgary Water Restrictions

In early January 2026, the City of Airdrie paused all outdoor skating rink maintenance — including the flooding of the popular skating loop at Northeast Regional Park — due to Stage 4 water restrictions triggered by a major water main break in Calgary.

Why Were the Rinks Paused?

A significant water main break in Calgary forced the implementation of Stage 4 water restrictions across the region. Because Airdrie's water supply is connected to Calgary's system, the city was required to reduce non-essential water usage — and outdoor rink flooding fell into that category. Maintaining and flooding outdoor ice surfaces requires a significant volume of water, making it one of the first activities paused under the restrictions.

Which Rinks and Facilities Were Affected?

All of Airdrie's outdoor skating rinks were affected, as well as the skating loop at Northeast Regional Park — one of the city's most popular winter amenities. The NE skating loop is a dedicated outdoor skating trail that draws residents from across the city each winter season.

When Was the Fix Expected?

The City of Calgary indicated at the time that the water main repair was expected to be complete by mid-January 2026. Once the repair was completed and restrictions were lifted, the city of Airdrie was expected to resume rink flooding and get the outdoor skating surfaces ready for the remainder of the winter season.

This situation highlighted how closely connected Airdrie's infrastructure is to Calgary's water system — something that affects city planning and services even when the issue originates outside Airdrie's borders. For residents eagerly awaiting outdoor skating in January 2026, it was a temporary but frustrating delay.
