Airdrie 2026 Municipal Budget: 4.6% Tax Increase Funds Fire Station, SW Rec Centre, and Road Improvements

The City of Airdrie has approved its operating budget for 2026, and it comes with a 4.6% municipal tax increase. For most households in the city, that works out to about $115 more per year — or roughly $10 per month. Here's a breakdown of what that money is going toward.

What Does the 4.6% Tax Increase Actually Mean for Homeowners?

For the average Airdrie home assessed at $614,000, the 4.6% municipal tax increase translates to approximately $115 more per year, or about $10 per month. If your home is assessed above or below that value, your increase will scale accordingly.

What Is the Money Going Toward?

The 2026 budget includes several meaningful projects for Airdrie residents. The new Northeast fire station is expected to reach completion in 2026 — a long-awaited addition to the city's emergency services infrastructure as the NE continues to grow. The Southwest Recreation Centre is also expected to break ground in 2026, which will be a major milestone for the west side of the city that has been underserved for recreational facilities.

Road Construction and Infrastructure

The budget also funds road improvements that residents have been waiting on. These include extending 40th Avenue West out to 24th Street and widening Yankee Valley Boulevard — two corridors that see significant traffic as the city's southwest communities grow. Additional parks and facility rehabilitation work is also included across the city.

Is a 4.6% Increase Reasonable?

Whether you see the 4.6% increase as reasonable depends on what you expect in return. For a city that has grown from roughly 40,000 to nearly 90,000 people over the past 15 years, the demand for infrastructure and services has intensified significantly. A new fire station serving the northeast, a rec centre for the southwest, and expanded road capacity are all concrete, tangible deliverables. At $10 more per month for the average homeowner, the ask is relatively modest given the scope of work.
