Airdrie's 24th Street SW Is Getting Extended to 40th Avenue — Here's What to Know

What is the 24th Street SW extension project in Airdrie?

24th Street SW in Airdrie is planned to be extended south to 40th Avenue, connecting the southwest corridor all the way to the Southwinds neighbourhood and the future southwest recreation centre site. Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in May 2026, with a 2-year completion timeline. This is a significant infrastructure improvement for southwest Airdrie residents who commute to Calgary regularly.

If you live in southwest Airdrie — or you're thinking about buying out there — this is a road project worth paying attention to.

24th Street SW is getting extended. The city has plans to take it all the way south down to 40th Avenue, connecting to Southwinds and running right past the site of Airdrie's new southwest recreation centre.

As of early May 2026, construction is tentatively scheduled to begin this month — though no equipment has been mobilized on site yet as of the time this was filmed. Once it gets going, the city is working with a 2-year construction schedule to complete this stretch.

Why This Matters for Southwest Airdrie

Right now, 24th Street SW doesn't connect all the way south. That creates a gap in the road network that forces residents in newer SW communities to take longer routes to reach other parts of the city — and especially to get on the road toward Calgary.

Extending 24th to 40th Avenue changes that. It creates a direct north-south connector through the southwest, linking communities like Southwinds to the rest of the city's road grid.

And it's not just about getting around Airdrie — it's about getting out of Airdrie. If you commute down to Calgary regularly, having a more direct access point to the southern end of the city's road network makes a real difference.

The New Rec Centre Connection

The extension also runs right by the site of Airdrie's new southwest recreation centre. That facility is still in the works, but having 24th Street extended to that area is exactly the kind of infrastructure you'd need in place before — or alongside — a major community anchor like a rec centre.

So this isn't just a road — it's part of a larger build-out of southwest Airdrie's infrastructure. For context on how much SW Airdrie is developing, Vantage Commons — a new grocery-anchored shopping centre — is also planned for 24th Street and Vantage Way. Piece by piece, this area is becoming much more self-sufficient.

And the infrastructure investment isn't limited to roads. Airdrie is also replacing pedestrian bridges in southwest neighbourhoods like Sierra Springs in 2026, improving walkability alongside the city's road network expansion.

What the 2-Year Timeline Actually Means

It's worth being realistic here: this project won't be done anytime soon. A 2-year construction schedule means the road won't be fully open to traffic until sometime around 2027 or 2028, depending on when crews actually break ground.

As Brad noted in the video, the May 2026 start date is tentative — no equipment was on site as of the filming date. So even that start date could shift.

If you're making a decision about buying in southwest Airdrie right now, this road project is a future improvement, not a current one. The area is still growing, and some of the infrastructure is still catching up. That's worth knowing going in.

But the long-term picture is solid. Airdrie has been actively investing in infrastructure across the city — from Main Street rehabilitation to pedestrian bridges to transit — and the 24th Street extension fits that same pattern of deliberate, long-term city building.

Is Now a Good Time to Buy in Southwest Airdrie?

Southwest Airdrie has some of the newest communities in the city — Southwinds, South Windsong, Cobblestone Creek — with newer builds, modern layouts, and more value per square foot compared to resale in established areas.

The trade-off has always been that the infrastructure is still catching up. Roads, amenities, transit — it all comes a few years after the homes are built.

That gap is closing. The 24th Street extension, the new rec centre, Vantage Commons — these are all signs that the southwest is maturing. If you've been watching this area and waiting for it to fill in, that process is actively underway.
