Airdrie Main Street Construction Is Back in May 2026 — Here's What's Happening

When does Main Street construction start in Airdrie in 2026?
The Main Street Rehabilitation Project picks back up in early May 2026 and runs through August. This year, crews are working on the northbound lanes — the southbound lanes from Elk Hill to Aaron Drive were done in 2025. The project is broken into 4 phases, with the first three targeting the northbound lanes (roughly one month each) and a final short phase finishing off the southbound side. After this season wraps, Main Street should be in solid shape for years to come.

Well, if you drive on Main Street regularly, you already know it's been a work in progress for a while now. The good news — and the slightly annoying news — is that construction is starting again in early May and running through August 2026.
Here's what's actually happening this year, broken down simply.
What's Being Done in 2026
Last year, crews dug up and rebuilt the southbound lanes from Elk Hill down to Aaron Drive. That work is done.
This year, the focus shifts to the northbound lanes — same stretch, same scope of work, opposite direction. Watch Brad break this down at 0:16.
The City of Airdrie has a phasing map posted on their website that shows exactly how the project is divided. You can check it out if you want to track which section is active at any given point during the summer.
The 4-Phase Breakdown
The 2026 season is structured into 4 distinct phases:
Phase 1, 2, and 3 — All on the northbound lanes. Each phase is scheduled to take roughly one month, putting the bulk of the work between May and late July.
Phase 4 — A short return to the southbound lanes. This is expected to be the final asphalt layer that gives the road a smooth, even finish across both directions — and it's scheduled to take only about 5 days.
So yes — it's another summer of construction on Main Street. But this one should be the last major disruption for a long time.
What This Means for Getting Around Airdrie
If Main Street is your go-to commute route, plan for slowdowns starting in May. The phased approach means the disruption will move through different sections of the road throughout the summer rather than shutting everything down at once — but lane restrictions will be in play for months.
A few practical things to keep in mind:
Check the City of Airdrie's website for the current phasing map — it'll show you which section is under active construction at any point
Morning and evening peak hours will be the worst for delays — if you have flexibility, even shifting your commute by 20–30 minutes can help
Alternate routes through East Lake, 8th Street, or toward Yankee Valley can take pressure off during the heaviest construction windows
It's worth noting that Airdrie is also investing significantly in its road infrastructure beyond just Main Street. The new traffic lights at Yankee Valley Boulevard and Kings Heights Gate are part of that same broader push to keep the city's road network functional as the population grows. And earlier this spring, a temporary 4-way stop on 1st Ave was installed as part of the planned widening of that corridor.
The city is also thinking longer-term about how people move around Airdrie — the 10-year Transit Master Plan that Council recently endorsed is designed to give residents more options than just driving. Main Street construction is frustrating in the short term, but it's part of a bigger picture of infrastructure investment that makes Airdrie a better place to live.
The Silver Lining
The silver lining here is real. As Brad put it at 0:56: after this final phase is done, Main Street should be in pretty good shape for a lot of years.
This isn't a patch job — it's a full rehabilitation. And once both directions are done and that final asphalt layer is down, you're looking at a properly rebuilt road corridor through the heart of the city.
One summer of inconvenience for years of smooth driving is a trade most Airdrie residents will take.
