The City of Airdrie has set a 2-year construction timeline, putting project completion in 2028. Good news if you live in or around Southwest Airdrie: the 24th Street to 40th Avenue road connection has officially broken ground.
If you've been waiting for better access between the west side of the city and South Winds, this is the project that delivers it.
That said — let's set expectations before you get too excited.
What This Connection Actually Is
The project links 24th Street on the west side of Airdrie all the way down to 40th Avenue in South Winds in the southwest of the city.
For anyone who's driven in that part of Airdrie, you already know how the disconnected road grid makes it harder to get around. This fills in a meaningful gap — one that'll matter more and more as South Winds continues to grow.
The Timeline: Don't Expect It in 2026 or 2027
This is the part worth noting clearly.
You're not going to be driving on a newly paved road here in 2026. And if it wraps up in 2027, it'll be toward the very end of the year — and even that's optimistic.
The reason it's taking this long is that this project is more complex than a standard road build. Before any pavement goes down, crews need to:
Install deep and shallow utilities beneath the road corridor
Build a bridge structure as part of the alignment
Complete pedestrian pathway prep work alongside the road
The City of Airdrie has officially assigned a 2-year construction timeline, which puts realistic completion at 2028.
