Why Is the Highland Storm Pond in Airdrie Being Pumped Out?
The Highland Storm Pond on Veterans Boulevard in northeast Airdrie is being temporarily drained for routine bank maintenance and pathway work. It is not a sign of a problem — once the work is complete, the pond will refill naturally on its own.

If you've driven along Veterans Boulevard in northeast Airdrie recently, you've probably done a double take.
The Highland Storm Pond is almost completely drained — and it looks a little alarming if you don't know why.
I got a few messages on Instagram and TikTok from people who spotted it and wanted to know what was going on. Short answer: there's nothing to worry about. Here's what's actually happening.
It's Routine Maintenance — Not a Problem
The city is doing bank maintenance on the storm pond — essentially reinforcing and maintaining the earthwork around the edges of the pond. At the same time, they're doing some pathway maintenance in the area.
To do that work properly, they need to pump the water out first. That's why it looks the way it does right now.
Once the maintenance is done, the storm pond will refill naturally — no intervention needed. Storm ponds in Airdrie collect stormwater runoff from the surrounding neighbourhoods, so it'll fill back up on its own over time.
What Is a Storm Pond and Why Does Airdrie Have So Many?
If you're newer to Airdrie, you've probably noticed that storm ponds are everywhere — tucked into almost every neighbourhood.
That's by design. Storm ponds are a core part of Airdrie's stormwater management system. They collect and hold runoff from streets, driveways, and rooftops, slowing it down before it flows into the natural watershed. They also help prevent flooding in lower-lying areas during heavy rain or rapid snowmelt.
Beyond the functional side, they add real value to the neighbourhoods around them. Homes backing onto or near a storm pond tend to hold their value well — the open views, the walking paths, and the green space are things buyers consistently ask about in the communities I work in.
The Highland community in northeast Airdrie is a good example of that. It's a well-established neighbourhood with good access to Veterans Boulevard, proximity to parks and pathways, and a strong sense of community. The storm pond is part of what makes the neighbourhood feel open and livable.
Speaking of Airdrie's outdoor spaces, the Chinook Winds Spray Park is also open for the 2026 season — another one worth knowing about if you've got kids or you're spending time outside this summer.
Staying Informed About What's Happening in Airdrie
This kind of thing — a drained pond, a new construction project, a road closure — tends to generate a lot of questions, and that's completely understandable. When you see something unexpected in your neighbourhood, you want to know what's going on.
I try to stay on top of this stuff so I can keep residents and buyers informed. Whether it's a new business opening, a city infrastructure project, or something under construction that nobody's explained, I'm usually paying attention to it. If you ever spot something and want a quick answer, send me a DM on Instagram or TikTok — I read them.
If you're keeping an eye on the broader Airdrie market, the Airdrie real estate market update for May 2026 is a good place to start — it covers where pricing sits right now, inventory levels, and what that means if you're thinking about buying or selling.
And if something new is coming to the city — a business, a development, a community event — I genuinely want to hear about it. The more I know, the more useful I can be to the people who follow along.
If you've got questions about what's happening in Airdrie — or if you're thinking about buying or selling — I'm always happy to chat. Call or text me anytime.
