SW Rec Centre Construction Start Delayed by One Year
The timeline for Airdrie’s new Southwest Recreation Centre has been pushed back by approximately one year. The City of Airdrie updated its website showing a revised schedule: Phase 1 construction will now begin in 2027 (previously 2026), with Phase 1 opening pushed to 2029 (previously 2028).
Old Timeline vs. New Timeline
Previous: Phase 1 construction starting 2026 | Phase 1 opening in 2028
Updated: Phase 1 construction starting 2027 | Phase 1 opening in 2029
What’s Happening on the Site?
As of late February 2026, no major construction has started on the SW Rec Centre site. The one visible progress item is a traffic circle on the southeast corner of the property — suggesting some early site work has begun, but the main build is still a year out.
Why the Timeline Matters for Airdrie’s Growth
Airdrie is on track to reach a population of 100,000 by 2028 and approximately 103,000 by 2029. With the city’s rapid growth — particularly in the southwest — a second recreation centre has been a high priority. A delay to 2029 means that for a year or more after hitting the 100,000-resident mark, Airdrie will still be operating with just one rec centre.
For the latest update on the project, city council has since endorsed a concept design for all three phases. Read that update here.
