City Council Endorses Concept Design for the New Southwest Recreation Centre
The new Southwest Recreation Centre in Airdrie just hit a major milestone. City council has officially endorsed a concept design for the three-phase facility, and the project will now move into the schematic design phase — the beginning of the actual architectural design process.
What Did Council Approve?
Council endorsed the concept design that was presented at the most recent city council meeting. This design covers all three phases of the rec centre project. While specific plans were shared at the meeting and shown in Brad’s video, they haven’t yet been published in a publicly accessible PDF. The video includes AI-rendered colour images showing what the finished facility could look like — though these are concept visuals, not final design drawings.
What Happens Next?
Now that the concept design is endorsed, the project officially enters the schematic design phase — where architects begin developing the actual detailed design of the building. Council also directed city administration to prepare potential cost-saving options, which will be presented at the July 7th city council meeting. That step will give council a clearer picture of where the budget stands and what adjustments may be needed.
Why the SW Rec Centre Matters for Airdrie
Southwest Airdrie has grown rapidly over the past decade, and a new recreation facility has been a long-standing priority for the community. The SW Rec Centre is intended to serve the growing population in neighbourhoods like Windhaven, Cobblestone Creek, and other southwest communities — giving residents a closer option for fitness, recreation, and community programming.
