Has Airdrie Switched to Automated Black Bin Garbage Pickup?

Yes — as of April 6, 2026, the City of Airdrie has fully transitioned to automated black bin garbage collection. The bin rollout is complete, and the new automated trucks are now running regular pickup routes. Extra bags are still accepted, but they must be placed directly beside your black bin with extra bag tags. Loose bags set out on their own will not be picked up. Note that routes and pickup dates have changed in some areas of the city.

If you've been waiting for Airdrie's black bin rollout to wrap up, the wait is over. As of today — April 6, 2026 — the City of Airdrie has made the full switch to automated garbage collection. The trucks are running, the bins are out, and the old system is behind us.

Here's what you actually need to know before your next pickup day.

The Key Rules for Airdrie Black Bin Pickup

The automated collection system changes how garbage gets handled at the curb. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Your black bin is your primary container. The automated trucks are designed to pick up the city-issued black bins — that's the new standard.

  • Extra bags are still allowed, but they must be placed directly beside your black bin with the proper extra bag tags attached. The truck operators will collect them alongside the bin.

  • Bags on their own will not be picked up. If you set out loose bags without your black bin — even with extra bag tags — they will be left behind. The bags need to be with the bin.

  • Check your pickup day and route. The transition to automated collection has come with route changes in some parts of Airdrie. Your garbage day may have shifted. If you're not sure, check the City of Airdrie website for your address.

Why This Matters for Airdrie Residents

The move to automated collection is a big operational shift for the city. Automated trucks are more efficient, require fewer workers per route, and reduce the physical strain on collection staff. For residents, the main adjustment is getting used to the bin-first approach — everything goes out with or in the bin, not around it.

The fact that the rollout is now complete is significant. Over the past several months, the city has been distributing bins to properties across Airdrie. That process is done. Everyone should have their bin now. If for some reason yours hasn't arrived, contact the City of Airdrie directly — don't assume your old approach will still work.

These kinds of city service transitions are part of what the 2026 Airdrie operating budget is funding — modernizing city services as the population grows and demands on infrastructure increase. Automated collection is one piece of that picture. Infrastructure investments like the new traffic lights going in at Yankee Valley and Kings Heights Gate are another.

For New Residents and Buyers Moving to Airdrie

If you're new to Airdrie — or in the process of buying a home here — this is one of those practical things worth knowing before you move in. Garbage day, pickup rules, and bin requirements vary from city to city, and Airdrie's system has just changed.

The short version: get your black bin out on your pickup day, put extra bags beside it (with tags), and double-check that your pickup day hasn't shifted in the transition. That's it.

Airdrie is a well-run city that takes its services seriously — this is a good example of that. If you're considering a move here or already live here and want to stay up to date on what's happening in the community, I share updates like this regularly.
