The neighbourhood of Hillcrest is located in the deep southwest of Airdrie, on the east side of 8th Street and on the south side of 40th Avenue.

It's one of the newer areas of the city, with its first homes being built around 2011 and construction just wrapped up last year, so the newest homes were built in 2021. You'll find a range of styles here, from townhomes to duplexes, and both front and laned detached homes. The nice thing about the townhomes in Hillcrest, is that there are no condo fees associated with them. This makes them an appealing option for buyers, as you have full control over your property. Of course, not having that condo fee drives up the price a bit on these - townhomes can be found anywhere from the $350,000 range to low $500,000s. Duplexes go for around $400,000 to $550,000 and the detached homes right now are in between $500,000 for those starter homes, up to almost $900,000 for the more luxury hillside houses.

If you prefer newer, more modern finishes than this definitely could be the area for you, but as with any recent development, it's gonna be harder to find that old school character. There is also a smaller average lot size in Hillcrest and smaller trees that just haven't had the time to mature. Although, as I mentioned before, you don't have to worry about houses being built beside you for years to come like other communities. For the most part, you can live construction dust and sound free if you choose to buy in Hillcrest.

The biggest appeal for Hillcrest for many buyers, is its close proximity and easy access to Calgary and the airport. Currently, the quickest route is directly south on 8th Street, but the soon to be finished 40th Avenue overpass will provide even quicker access to the highway for all residents in south Airdrie. The 83 million dollar project is well on its way and is scheduled to be completed in October 2023. This will also offer a speedy commute to the east side of Highway 2 and to the large shopping area in Kings Heights.

As for amenities in the area, there are a lot of pathways and parks to explore with your family, which can keep you busy in the summer months. For now, you'll likely be driving to get to any of the more popular attractions in Airdrie, like Genesis Place, Chinook Winds Park, and Nose Creek Park. If we look into the future though, we do have a new rec centre planned to be completed in 2025 in South Windsong, which is just across 8th Street and very walkable.

The closest shopping area to Hillcrest is the Cooperstown Promenade which features big names like Save On Foods, McDonalds, and Shoppers Drug Mart, but also has a range of boutique retailers, services, and restaurants. We especially love The Pizza Shop and Balzac Craft Brewing. You can also find Munchkin Academy Preschool and Aspire Chiropractic and Massage.

You're also just a short drive down 40th Avenue to the Sierra Springs shopping centre which includes bigger stores like Walmart and Home Depot. We can't forget that being this south, means a 5 minute drive to Cross Iron Mills Mall, New Horizon Mall, and Costco.

Now, for the schools in the area, kids kindergarten to grade 8 will attend Northcott Prairie School which is located right in Hillcrest and high school students will go to W.H. Croxford High School, which is just up 8th Street on the corner of 8th and Yankee Valley Boulevard. Walking distance would be about 30 minutes give or take from home.

Hillcrest seems to be the best fit for those that prefer newer homes and want to be as close to Calgary as possible, without being in the big city itself, while also not having to deal with construction. There are a lot of families in the neighbourhood with young kids, as newer homes tend to attract a younger demographic. Airdrie overall is a very young and vibrant city, so anywhere you decide to settle will have young families to meet.
