Airdrie Is Rolling Out Automated Garbage Collection with Black Bins in Mid-2026
It's been a long time coming, but automated garbage collection is officially headed to Airdrie. The City of Airdrie is rolling out black bins for garbage pickup in mid-2026 — meaning a big change to how households manage their waste.
What You Need to Know About the Black Bins
All Airdrie households will initially receive a 120-litre bin for garbage collection. The city may offer additional size options down the road, but the 120L bin is the starting standard for the automated program.
How Much Will It Cost?
The automated garbage bin program is expected to cost between $8 and $22 per household per year. The exact cost will depend on factors finalized closer to rollout, but either way it's a relatively modest addition to the average utility bill.
Why Automated Garbage Collection?
Automated garbage collection is standard in many Canadian municipalities. The system uses specialized trucks with mechanical arms to lift and empty standardized bins, reducing manual labour and improving consistency. For residents, it means a tidier, more predictable garbage day — no more wrestling with bags in a Calgary winter.
When Is This Happening?
The rollout is scheduled for mid-2026. As of early January 2026, the program was confirmed and planning was underway. The City of Airdrie will communicate directly with residents as the rollout date approaches.
