The City of Airdrie released its October 2026 update on the Southwest Recreation Centre, along with new renderings of the facility. The project is in the detailed design phase, construction starts in 2027, and the full facility — pool, fitness centre, arenas, gymnasium, fieldhouse, and indoor family activity zone — opens all at once in 2030.

Well, the city just dropped its October update on the Southwest Rec Centre, and they've given us a first real look at what this thing is going to look like. New renderings are out — and it's a big facility.

Everything Opens at Once in 2030

Earlier this year, Airdrie City Council made a major decision: instead of building the Southwest Rec Centre in phases, they approved the whole facility in a single phase.

That means residents won't be waiting years between amenities. When the doors open in 2030, you'll have access to all of it at the same time:

Pool · Fitness centre · Arenas · Gymnasium · Fieldhouse · Indoor family activity zone

It's a significant commitment for a city of Airdrie's size, and it signals just how fast the southwest side of the city has grown — and is expected to keep growing. Hear Brad break down the single-phase decision at 0:08.

Where the Project Stands Right Now

The SW Rec Centre is currently in the detailed design phase. That's the stage where everything gets worked out at the granular level — room layouts, storage solutions, accessibility features, door placements, light switches. The kind of decisions that don't make the news but matter a lot once the building is in use.

On the cost side, the project is in what's called a Class C estimate. No public budget numbers have been released yet, and that's intentional: the city is preparing to go out for construction bids and wants to keep the bidding process competitive. Releasing numbers now could affect what they end up paying. Brad explains the Class C estimate at 0:31.

What's Coming Next Quarter

Over the next quarter, a few key milestones are on the horizon:

Pick the Play Experience survey results. Residents were asked what they want in the indoor family activity zone — climbing walls, trampolines, play structures? The results of that survey are expected next quarter and will shape what actually gets built into that space.

Construction drawings. The project moves into the construction drawing phase, where the final plans get locked in for permitting and construction. This is the last major design step before shovels go in the ground.

Class B cost estimate. A more refined cost estimate will be developed, moving from the current Class C to a Class B — still not public, but it's getting closer to real numbers that will eventually be shared.

Construction Starts in 2027

The current timeline has construction starting in 2027, with the facility opening in 2030. Airdrie is one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada, and the southwest has been one of the most active areas for new development. A rec centre of this scale has been a long time coming for that part of the city.
