Has Construction Started on the 24th Street to 40th Ave SW Connection in Airdrie?
Yes — construction has officially started on the road that will connect 24th Street SW on the west side of Airdrie down to 40th Avenue in South Winds. The city has assigned a 2-year construction timeline, meaning this road won't be open until 2028 at the earliest.

If you've been waiting for this connection to happen, the good news is: the equipment is in the ground and the work has begun. The less exciting news is that we're not driving on a newly paved road in 2026 — and possibly not in 2027 either.
Why It's Taking Until 2028
This isn't a simple pave-and-go project. Before any pavement can go down, crews need to install deep and shallow utilities along the corridor, build a bridge structure as part of the alignment, and complete prep work for the pedestrian pathways along the route.
All of that adds up to a 2-year construction timeline from the City of Airdrie, putting the target completion date in 2028. If work progresses ahead of schedule, 2027 is technically possible — but even then, it wouldn't likely open until later that year.
Why This Road Matters for SW Airdrie
This connection is going to be significant for Southwest Airdrie — and the timing lines up with major development coming to the area. The new commercial area in South Winds is also expected to be finished around 2028, and the new recreation centre is slated for 2030.
Having a direct north-south connection through that part of the city will take meaningful pressure off the existing roads — especially as more homes and services come online in the southwest. For anyone living in South Winds, Southwinds, or nearby communities, this road is going to change your daily commute.
What This Means for Real Estate in SW Airdrie
Infrastructure like this tends to support property values over time. The combination of improved road access, a new commercial node, and a future rec centre makes the southwest quadrant of Airdrie one of the more interesting areas to watch from a real estate perspective over the next few years.
If you're buying in SW Airdrie now — or thinking about it — you're buying ahead of a lot of the infrastructure that will make that area even more convenient. That's typically a good position to be in.
